Filming in Hong Kong
Finding a fixer
in Hong Kong
Filming in Hong Kong is a fantastic experience but there are certain considerations all international filmmakers need to take on board. Luckily, with us as your fixer in Hong Kong, we’ll help you navigate any visa issues, location permits, or language and cultural barriers you may come up against. Cantonese is the primary language, though English is widely understood.
Still, if you’re worried about getting lost in translation, don’t be. With Hong Kong Fixer’s local team in your corner, you’ll have no problem being understood whether you’re shouting “action” or ordering cart noodles!
Cultural facts
When filming in Hong Kong, respect for local customs should go without saying. It’s especially important to be mindful of religious sites and practices, especially in temples. If filming inside temples, you will need to take off your shoes and hats, and never touch the Buddhist monks. Additionally, Hong Kongese, or Hong Kongers, value punctuality and politeness, so professional conduct is expected. Small talk and friendly greetings aren’t the norm, so don’t be surprised if you get funny looks if offering either!
Weather when filming in Hong Kong
Hong Kong’s climate is sub-tropical, with hot, humid summers and mild, drier winters. Filming in Hong Kong between May and September means facing uncomfortable heat and humidity day and night. Tropical cyclones and occasional typhoons in the South China Sea can bring torrential rain, flooding, and destructive winds, especially from July to September (so, make sure those cameras have covers!) October to April is generally warm and dry, but it can be cloudy, with only 3-4 hours of sunshine expected per day from February to April.
Tax rebate in Hong Kong
Unfortunately, foreign filmmakers do not qualify for a tax rebate when filming in Hong Kong. However, at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival, The Europe fund (the Hong Kong-Europe-Asian Film Collaboration Funding Scheme), announced award grants of up to HK$9 million (approx. $1.1 million) to film projects co-produced between a European territory and Hong Kong. Part of the stipulation is that 30% of the below-the-line cost must be spent in Hong Kong. As your film fixer in Hong Kong, we can help you navigate this and other funds available for co-productions.
